Choosing the Right Food for Your Pet

Choosing a good holistic dog food isn't always easy. Package labels can be confusing, and beyond identifying whether a food is chicken- or lamb-based, it often feels like you need a science degree to decipher the rest. An ingredient may sound good and conjure up images of plump, juicy meat but the legal definition of that ingredient can be very different from what you'd expect. We can't change the labeling laws, but we can give you an overview of what to look for in a good-quality food. First and foremost: dogs are carnivore/omnivores, and a good proportion of their diet needs to come from meat protein.
Raw Diet
The raw diet is the most biologically appropriate food for dogs and cats. Benefits include real meat and organ meat, natural vitamins and minerals, a low glycemic profile, help with weight management, natural cleaning action for teeth and breath, reduced stool volume, fewer allergies and less itching, less shedding, and lower vet bills over time.
Dry Kibble
Dry kibble is the most common food fed to dogs and cats because of its availability, portability, convenience, and cost. Choices include single-protein options, grain-free, low-grain, limited-ingredient, and freeze-dried-raw-coated kibble, among others.
Canned Food
Canned food ranks second for digestibility. Benefits include real meat with no meals or binders, easier digestion, help with weight management and allergies, single-protein options, strong palatability for finicky or senior pets, a long shelf life, easy portability, and added moisture that dry kibble lacks.
Cats
